Background:
Up to the Deep Freeze episode summary
I also want to note that I am incorporating his childhood background, which is not elaborated on in the animated universe, but is likely unchanged. Mainly how he was an anti-social child, who froze domestic animals and was shipped to boarding school, where he met his future wife Nora.
Personality: Out of all the Batman villains, none have quite a personality like Victor Fries aka Mr. Freeze. For starters, he is not the typical villain that is used to being seen as an adversary of Batman’s. He doesn’t wish to see Gotham burn down into flames nor to take over the world, kill others or even attack Batman unless necessary. While his childhood was complicated, Victor never had a very rough life (at least not compared to other villains in the gallery) and he certainly wouldn’t classify as having any sort of mental psychosis. He is overall a reserved man who keeps to himself, never going out of his way to speak with others and keeping to himself more than not. While there are evident signs of antisocial behavior and depression, it never tipped him over the edge so to speak into a life of crime. It’s easiest to say Victor is a man done wrong and crime was the only way to take his revenge.
Let’s start with the basics. Freeze is a general recluse, who does not interact much with society on a normal basis. He was not an exceptional person genetically, evident by the fact that he was close to balding in his thirties, and this made him insecure with himself and generally timid. Even before the lab accident, he never went out on a limb to socialize and was more interested in science. He believed his intelligence could overcome any physical and social discrepancies, and that society was more to blame for not accepting him, so he pursued his love of cryogenics even as a child. However, his stunted emotional and social growth would have consequences at an early age. He never saw anything wrong in freezing both dying and healthy animals, so that they could continue living beyond their lifespan in the future, and couldn’t comprehend why his parents were disturbed by his actions. This continues on through most of his adult life, as his fascination toward cryogenics leads him toward the thoughts of immortal preservation through the science.
After the lab accident that changes his body and makes it impossible to live outside of a subzero temperature, Victor becomes Mr. Freeze. As Mr. Freeze, he claims that his emotions are frozen and that he longer has any regard for human life. While the latter may be true, given he was more than willing to kill for his revenge, the former is highly questionable. Freeze is shown multiple times to still have emotions, but pertaining mainly toward two things. The first is his regarding himself. He still shows signs of being angry, bitter, panicked and even tearful in the series, proving that he is not devoid of emotion as he claims to be. If anything, the claim is likely made to make people more frightened of him and take him as a legitimate threat. The second is his wife, Nora, who was cryogenically frozen after an incurable disease nearly took her life. He does show emotions from time to time in expressions, but they are normally contained and his icy tone is rarely unheard, even when expressing both shock and even amusement.
He is not without his flaws naturally. While Freeze doesn’t have any real mental psychosis afflicting him, he does have a very large narcissistic personality, in that he does not believe he can do wrong. He does not see any problems with taking company funds to finance his research, becoming a criminal to exact his vengeance, never understood why his parents were against his freezing experiments and the list can go on. Even after everything he does, he never admits to wrongdoing nor does he show remorse toward his actions. If using force is necessary to further his goals then he will do so, stating that he does not care for other people or their pains. He will tear down any wall, abandon, attack and even kill anyone he has to, in order to get what he wants. This includes innocent bystanders and even his own henchmen, as he opts to leave one whose legs he accidentally froze (blaming the henchman and saying he should have been more careful). While he is still considered to be an anti-villain (“the ends justify the means”, essentially is the quick way to describe it) he is no true ally to Batman and will never see eye to eye with the vigilante, so long as the other stands in his way, no matter what passing sympathies the other may give him.
However we cannot talk about Freeze without taking into account his raison d'etre, Nora Fries. Victor recognizes easily that he has never been a very sociable person. He was more interested in science and the pursuit of immortality than interacting with others in a casual setting. His antisocial behavior coupled with his depression and made him a general outcast. However, there was an exception to that in Nora. To Victor, she was the most beautiful woman in the world and the one who warmed his heart for the first time in years and the two fell in love and married. But, she was fatally ill with an unknown disease that was quickly killing her. Victor spent countless days and nights with little sleep to find a cure, but came out empty handed. In order to give them more time, Victor requested that Nora go under cryogenic sustainment, which would freeze her in time until he could research and produce a cure. Not long after his body is transformed by the laboratory experiment and his faith in humanity as a whole shatters. The only thing that keeps him going at first is exacting his vengeance against the CEO which caused his accident and the assumed death of his wife, but later when he discovers that Nora’s containment cell survived the accident with her inside he swears to find her a cure and to not leave her side.
His devotion to her is clear, as even when Oceania is being destroyed, Victor opts to stay with Nora’s containment tube and possibly die there. Suffice to say, Nora is Victor’s driving force in many of his actions and choices. Yet there is something very wrong with his love for her, as it bridges on nigh-obsession. He quite literally puts her on a pedestal, as the only one who he truly loved and the only one who ever truly loved him. If she is involved in any way, he will always take her safety and well being into account before all else. Despite claiming that his emotions are frozen, there is no mistake that Victor truly loves Nora and would do anything to see her healthy and lively again. If not that, then at least stay by her side.
Abilities: While Freeze is a normal human being, I feel that his condition should be at least addressed properly.
Due to the lab accident caused by Gothcorp CEO Ferris Boyles, Freeze’s entire body has biologically changed due to the cryogenic chemicals he was doused with after crashing into them. His entire metabolic structure altered and, as a result, he can no longer sustain life outside of a subzero temperature and can only go out in broad daylight with his suit on. It also changed other parts of him, such as his voice being naturally lower when out of his suit and his entire body being literally ice blue in color.
